Bio culture in Hungary
During the last couple of years bio-culture has been started to spread across the country. At the moment about 1% of the agricultural lands are used strictly by bio-methods, but it is growing fast. Almost all of the top-quality Hungarian bio-products are exported.
Traditional Hungarian animal husbandry is still practiced in the vast plains of Hortobagy, a westernmost piece of an Asian steppe in the heart of Europe. Famous original, traditional breeds are the following:
- Great Grey Hungarian Cattle which became very popular in Western-Europe since it is resistant for BSE
- Mangalica Pig which you can eat without the risk of rising your cholesterol level or developing cancer
- Racka and Cigaja Sheep arrived with us from Asia 13 centuries ago
- Przewalski and Hucul Stud
- special Hungarian Hare-, Goose-, Duck-breeds and many more poultry
Bio-honey has a long tradition while goat-milk and cheese started to earn some fame recently.
Hungarian bio-cultural methods are practiced in almost all fields of agriculture, such as:
- gardening of vegetables and fruits
- wine-making
- producing cereals
just to mention a few.
